Covering the essential tools for writing music to appeal to publishers, record labels and producers across genres and media channels, this course will help you to create your own music and lyrics, develop your instrumental skills, produce demos and perform your own songs.

Combining technical principles with pure creative expression, this hands-on course will help you start to find your voice, sharpen your craft and create songs that will be remembered. You will receive - at the core of your songwriting studies - weekly one-on-one private mentoring sessions to work on your songwriting, and develop a folio of original songs.

Covering the essential tools for writing music to appeal to publishers, record labels and producers across genres and media channels, this course will help you to create your own music and lyrics, develop your instrumental skills, produce demos and perform your own songs.

The Bachelor degree is designed to help you create strong, focused songs that perfectly blend your lyrical ideas with powerful melodies. You will learn key concepts in form, structure, melodic development, harmony, top-lining, and writing for ensembles using acoustic and electronic instrumentation. Through weekly one-on-one mentoring sessions as part of your major ‘Directed Songwriting’ study, you will work on a substantial folio of original songs, and produce, record or perform them to showcase your writing talent. You will also complete a large project as part of your final folio, which can include a live recital alongside recorded work.

Ric Rufio

Lecturer Spotlight: Ric Rufio

Dan Mifsud (stage name: Ric Rufio) is a songwriter, producer, multi-instrumentalist and JMC Sydney music lecturer whose dynamic career has led him to collaborate with some of the most revered artists worldwide. He has shared the stage with Ed Sheeran and Adele and is currently a leading tour vocalist for Flight Facilities, a role that has seen him perform at major international events, including Coachella in 2024.

In addition to his collaborative work, Ric has pursued his solo career with notable success. In 2016, he uploaded a song to SoundCloud, which unexpectedly went viral, attracting attention from international labels Def Jam and Parlophone and has since gone on to release tracks that have received over 500,000 Spotify streams.
