Making the decision to study after school is a daunting choice for anybody, regardless of your area of interest.
This is your life, your future, that’s up for grabs- and it’s not coming cheap. You want to make the right choice, but with all of the mixed messaging and options out there it’s easy to catch a little analysis paralysis.
JMC Academy has never described itself as a university. We never will. Yes it’s true, we provide fully accredited tertiary qualifications with our Higher Education Degree and Diplomas and produce graduates ready to jump into the industry, but the point of difference for us comes with the day-to-day experience of attending JMC. The way we work with our students and our way of operating as an institution is nothing like university, and here are a few reasons why.
You will never have so much access to such high quality facilities.
Sure, universities offer studies in music, film or design etc. You might go to a lecture with a few hundred others and then perhaps a tute in a classroom designed to serve a variety of disciplines.
Instead of hitting you with a “that’s nice, sweetie”, let’s paint a picture of the alternative. Imagine pursuing your passions in a space that has been designed to suit your creative needs specifically, with state of the art technology and no need to share with a partner. Imagine attending lectures that feel more like a dinner party with friends, where you know your lecturer and they know you. Where no microphones are needed to reach the back of the room and you don’t need binoculars to see what’s going on at the front.
This is how we like to run things at JMC, because we believe that the best learning begins with accessibility. We have set up our campuses to ensure that our audio students have hands-on access to world-class audio studios, our film students operate the best cameras on real, working film sets and our design students are working in studios that are the envy of creative firms everywhere. There’s no waiting time or taking turns, because we know that creativity can strike at any moment, and you need the proper toolkit when it does.
Our educators walk the talk.
There is no such thing as a full-time lecturer or tutor at JMC. In fact, we’re quite sure that none of our educators would refer to themselves as such. Designers, animators, engineers, screenwriters… rock legends? Absolutely, but the point is that every one of our teachers are out in the world making their own dreams happen, often even engaging their own students to come along for the ride. Consequently, this lived experience offers far more wisdom than anything we could write into a curriculum and that is precisely why we search so far and wide to ensure that we’re finding the most talented creative professionals.
Creativity can’t be taught, but it can be nurtured, reinforced and uplifted. Who better to learn from than someone who truly appreciates the journey of a creative mind.
You won’t get lost in the crowd.
There are some BIG uni’s out there. With tens of thousands of students coming and going at any given time, it can become quite easy to get lost in the sauce. One of our biggest values at JMC is avoiding this specifically. With one-on-one support for our students across the board from our educators and student services teams, our aim is to ensure that every student is able to maximise their learning experience in a way that is unique to them.
We’re committed to tailoring what we provide as an institution to suit the needs of each individual. No jamming square blocks through round holes here, our aim is to become the conductor between our students and their full potential.
Everything we do gives back to the Creative Industries.
When it comes to the day to day of JMC, our aim is to not only do it well, but to do it transparently. Unlike other institutions that are obliged to allocate funding to different faculties and maintain placings with various organisations, everything JMC does directly feeds back into supporting our students and the arts. It’s no secret that the Creative Industries have recently had it tough, so how could we not work to build bigger, better and more diverse opportunities in a field that we clearly love so much?
Even with the pandemic-sized curveballs we’ve been pitched, it has been exciting to see Australian creatives take the spotlight as world leaders for their expertise and skill in recent years. Being able to support new creative ventures and the people that make them happen is our lifeforce, and it brings us so much pride to be able to help set the bar for educating creative minds internationally. For forty years we have developed, refined and, most importantly, learned from the best, to truly know what it takes to help young creators to thrive.
