When people think of careers in audio, they often envision recording engineers or music producers. While these are certainly key roles, an Audio Engineering degree from JMC Academy can open doors to a wide array of lesser-known, yet equally rewarding career opportunities.
Here’s a look at a few additional jobs you might not have considered, but which offer exciting prospects for anyone passionate about audio!

1. Acoustic Consultant

Acoustic consultants work on a variety of projects, from designing soundproofing solutions in buildings to optimising the acoustics in concert halls, theatres, or even sports stadiums. This role involves understanding the science of sound and applying it to create spaces with ideal acoustical properties, whether that means reducing noise pollution in urban environments or enhancing sound quality in performance venues (read: anywhere that has sounds).

This job is perfect for those who are fascinated by the physics of sound and how it interacts with different environments. It’s a highly creative role that requires problem-solving skills and often involves collaborating with architects, engineers, and designers.

2. Dialogue Editor for Film and TV

Dialogue editors are responsible for ensuring that the spoken elements of a film or television show are ~crystal clear~. This involves editing and syncing dialogue recorded on set, replacing poor-quality audio with ADR (Automated Dialogue Replacement), and ensuring that the dialogue matches the visuals perfectly.

This behind-the-scenes role is critical to the quality of any film or TV production, yet it often goes unnoticed by the audience. It requires a keen ear, attention to detail, and the ability to work closely with directors and sound designers to achieve the best possible outcome. Perfect for those who are fans of both the audio and film industries!

3. Virtual Reality (VR) Sound Designer

With the rise of virtual reality, sound designers are increasingly needed to create immersive audio experiences for VR environments. This involves designing soundscapes that move with the user, creating realistic spatial audio effects, and ensuring that the audio complements the visual elements of the VR experience.

This is a cutting-edge (and mind boggling!) field at the intersection of technology and creativity. It’s perfect for those who are excited about new media and want to be at the forefront of audio innovation (we find that most of our audio students fit this bill!).

4. Audio Archivist

An audio archivist is responsible for preserving and managing collections of sound recordings, which could range from historical speeches to rare music performances. This role involves cataloging, restoring, and digitising audio recordings, as well as ensuring their long-term preservation for future generations.

This job is ideal for those who are passionate about history and audio technology. It combines archival research with technical skills, offering the chance to work in museums, libraries, or broadcasting companies!
