There are a million ways to be an actor (now more than ever).
So, in an industry that is constantly evolving, JMC’s acting course has always involved unique and dynamic learning experiences designed to position our students for success in whatever specialisation they may choose. Our newest course comes as further acknowledgement of our students’ needs to diversify and specialise in their field of choice. Now couldn’t be a more perfect time to introduce you to our Bachelor of Creative Arts (Acting) Major in Music Theatre.
So, what is it exactly?
Starting in February 2024, JMC’s Bachelor of Creative Arts (Acting) Major in Music Theatre is quite a mouthful (we get our students to say in 10x fast as a vocal warmup… jk). The course provides an immersive way of learning the principles of acting for music theatre, film, theatre, television and new media, giving students the diverse range of skills and the confidence to launch a sustainable career in Acting and Music Theatre.
It’s a performance-focused degree that incorporates the disciplines of musicianship, physical theatre and dance to provide students with a complete mental and physical comprehension and appreciation for their craft. Performances range from showcases in an intimate setting to full staged productions in some of Melbourne’s best theatres. The course’s Graduate Show provides our fledgling actors the opportunity to experience a complete professional production process in collaboration with Australian and International Directors & production teams. As part of the curriculum at JMC, all Acting and Music Theatre students work on various projects across performance mediums such as film and tv, voice over, motion capture, stage combat & fight choreography, and cinematic design.
With over 40 years in the business of preparing actors for their future careers, JMC also understands the various and nuanced obstacles individuals might face throughout their creative careers. In addition to the skills we teach in acting and performance arts, we teach our actors business acumen which enables them to enter the industry with confidence and a portfolio of works which can be showcased to agents, casting directors, and audition panels.
How does this degree vary from JMC’s traditional acting course?
Majoring in Music Theatre is the perfect option for students who wish to incorporate increased musicality and traditional musical theatre techniques into their performance style. The course has been designed to emphasise the craftsmanship and discipline required for performing live and provides actors with a powerful foundation of skills that are beneficial across all dimensions of the acting industry.
If you haven’t heard, JMC’s Acting and Music Theatre courses are accelerated 2 year programs meaning JMC students are able to graduate faster and enter the industry much sooner.
