For the second year in a row, SXSW Sydney has come along and blown our socks completely off!

What an absolutely bonkers, AMAZING week for our JMC community, who came together to put their best feet forward and helped to showcase the many amazing talents we possess. On and behind the stage and camera, across screens and in your ears, here are some of the highlights from JMC’s time at SXSW Sydney 2024…

Our auditorium became the SXSW Sydney Studio…
An on-campus operation manned by JMC’s Film and Audio Engineering students, the SXSW Sydney Studio became a hub of activity for the entire week of SXSW as we played host to a wide range of talented thought leaders and creative brains.
Sending out a massive congratulations to the JMC students that rigged, staged coordinated, filmed and edited the many goings on at the SXSW Sydney Studio space! With all of the professionalism and skill required to keep a world class project afloat, you all shone like the stars you are.

JMC’s SPECTRUM Showcase
On Thursday, all heads were turned towards the Tumbalong Park stage for SPECTRUM, the JMC Academy showcase featuring two amazing alumni acts! Solo artist ALIYA and JMC alumni band Maybe In May took to the stage and absolutely shredded their sets- which could be heard right around Darling Harbour!

Featured alongside the music performances were some stunning visuals from JMC’s Visual Design students, plus JMC’s Entertainment Business Management students were on the ground to make sure everything ran to plan. What an absolutely stellar way to spend a day in the Sydney sunshine!

Avante Garde AI: JMC Academy Lecturers in Conference
On Tuesday, JMC’s own Senior Animation/Game Design Lecturer/Artist Petr Joura and Associate Dean Damian Gascoigne took to the stage at the ICC to participate and moderate the panel ‘AVANT-GARDE AI: CREATIVE OWNERSHIP IN THE SECOND WAVE’. Alongside leading industry professionals including Leonardo AI Head of Research Martin Bell and Senior Creative Technologist Jessie Hughes, this discussion thrashed out what’s been happening with the genesis of AI image generation and explained how creatives and innovators are getting ahead of the second wave with exploratory, cross-disciplinary work.

It was a truly mind-bending, mind opening event that showcased the deep knowledge and future focus of our valued JMC academic staff. Congratulations to all who took part in this future-focussed event!

Student Games Showcase at SXSW
Our Game Design students were on fire last Thursday at the SXSW Sydney Student Games Showcase! Student developed games from our Sydney and Melbourne campuses were presented to the best in the industry in an interactive spectacular hosted by UTS. Hands on gameplay and demonstrations abound, it was an awesome moment to see our students take a step onto the industry stage and present their work to the world!

As always, our students gained once in a lifetime opportunities…
Whether it was helping to coordinate a SXSW interview, getting hands-on with staging equipment, or gaining insights through discussions with the creative industry’s best and brightest, SXSW Sydney has once again given JMC students the opportunity to dip their toes into their own creative futures. We’re so pleased that our partnership with SXSW Sydney has given our students another year to learn and grow in the best possible learning environment- we can’t wait to see what next year brings!
